Project Background
Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim Education and Training Board (MSLETB) have been awarded funding, through the SOLAS “Skills to Advance: Innovation through Collaboration” Call for Proposals 2021, to research and develop Immersive Technology (ImTech) Skills Training and Resources for the renewable wind energy sector using immersive technology enhanced-learning tools.
Definitions
Immersive Technologies:
Refers to new ways of creating, displaying and interacting with computer-generated applications, content, and objects to give the user the experience of being immersed into a simulated environment for work or recreation purposes.
INTRODUCTION
Virtual Reality (VR) Training is being implemented in various industry sectors to assist in the training of technicians and operatives.
Trainees don VR headsets that visually immerse the user into a fully interactive high-definition 3-D simulation of their normal work environment.
This VR-simulated environment allows the trainees to actively learn how to conduct maintenance, manufacture products, or operate machinery and equipment using complex specifically-designed VR Experiences, either at home or in the workplace.
The main Cost Benefit to employers is that Learning Times for trainees are greatly improved by first accessing VR Training, reducing time spent in costly overseas training centres.
Here in the ImTechSkills Project, our mission is to develop VR Training Experiences that can help demonstrate the job tasks that a Wind Turbine Engineer performs as part of routine annual maintenance on a wind turbine.
Such experiences can also be developed to encourage technical students / young professionals to consider a career as a Wind Turbine Engineer. With the extensive plans Ireland has to become a major player in generating electricity from onshore and offshore wind energy, we understand the need to start early in encouraging people into the sector.
